- WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL MEDICINE?
Nutritional medicine is based on a holistic approach to healing, where the whole person is taken into account – mind, body, and spirit. It is the study of food, its nutrients, its therapeutic potential and how one’s diet can affect their health and wellbeing. Nutritional medicine is considered as nutritional therapy, where dietary advice and the prescription of nutritional supplements (when needed) are used to assist in the treatment of a broad range of health conditions.
In essence, nutritional medicine takes the approach of finding the underlying cause of disharmony and ill health within the body, rather than ‘treating’ the symptoms, as well as taking measures of preventative health to support the body’s optimal functioning.
- WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NUTRITIONIST AND A DIETITIAN?
I get this question a lot!
Let’s start with clearing the confusion and explain what a nutritionist and dietitian both do. Both practice evidence-based medicine and share the same treatment vision – better diet, better health, and thus better overall wellbeing. To put simply, they are both experts in food and diet. However, their approach in how they practice comes from quite different philosophies.
A nutritionist (aka a clinical nutritionist or holistic nutritionist, as I like to call myself) follows the principles of nutritional medicine, as explained above. Using a holistic approach to healing, a nutritionist recognises that ill health or disease is quite complex and is caused by a number of factors. These factors are explored in detail to find the root cause of ill health. In regards to treatment, a nutritionist tailors a treatment protocol based on the individual and their unique needs, taking into consideration the whole person - the cornerstone of holistic practice.
Dietitians on the other hand are trained to give evidence-based dietary advice to treat health conditions and convert scientific information into a tailored diet plan for each client and their health goals. Dietitians generally follow the traditional food pyramid recommended by the government.
Nutritionists tend to work in holistic health centres or in private practice. Whereas dietitians usually work with population health and in settings where clients have specialised dietary needs, such as in hospitals and nursing homes.
Neither nutritionist or dietitian is better than the other - both have their place.
- WHAT CAN A NUTRITION CONSULTATION HELP ME WITH?
Quite a lot actually. And it’s not just about weight loss! During my nutritional medicine studies, not only did we learn the ins and outs of nutrition, diet and nutritional biochemistry, we also learnt extensively about various health conditions and how to facilitate treatment based on nutritional needs, through diet and/or supplementation.
I am passionate about women’s health and supporting women’s conditions, such as hormone imbalances, menstrual cycle difficulties, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, preconception & pregnancy care, and fertility. However, I do also treat general health concerns like digestive issues, food sensitivities/intolerances, fatigue/poor energy, adrenal fatigue, poor immunity, thyroid issues, skin concerns, stress management, etc.
You’ll be amazed on what some diet & lifestyle alterations and supplementation can do!
