Did you know that your basal body temperature (BBT

Did you know that your basal body temperature (BBT) isn’t just about tracking ovulation?

Your BBT can tell you a lot about your cycle and health, that’s why I love to track it and teach it to my Fertility Awareness clients.

Your BBT is the body’s core waking temperature at rest. Temperatures are taken orally with a basal body thermometer upon waking after 4-6 consecutive hours of sleep and before you get out of bed. You simply wake up in the morning, put the thermometer in your mouth, take your temperature and note it down in a cycle chart, and then go about your day. It really is that easy!

Knowing when (and if) you ovulate not only is important, but it’s also truly empowering! Your BBT is incredibly useful when trying to conceive AND when avoiding pregnancy (without the use of hormonal birth control). It can also provide you with valuable information about other health markers.

Here’s what your BBT can tell you:
🌡 Confirms ovulation has taken place (or if it hasn’t).
🌡 Confirms the end of the fertile window (in combination with cervical mucus changes).
🌡 Shows the length of your follicular phase and luteal phase. This is important when wanting to know if your luteal phase is within a healthy range.
🌡 Shows adequate or inadequate progesterone levels within the luteal phase.
🌡 Can detect potential thyroid imbalances.
🌡 Can detect early signs of pregnancy, by counting luteal phase days.
🌡 Can show early signs of miscarriage.

🌡 Your BBT can also be a great indicator of how different stressors impact and affect your cycle.

Now, it’s worth mentioning, BBT cannot predict ovulation. It can only tell you that ovulation has taken place after the fact. So it is super important to combine tracking your BBT with other fertile signs like cervical mucus to know when you are fertile.

I think it’s safe to say most of us (if not all) have been there at least once.⁠
⁠
It can be super stressful and at times, confusing, when our period doesn’t arrive when we expect it to. Late periods are often quickly associated with pregnancy scares (if we are trying to avoid pregnancy), leaving us in a panic and taking a home pregnancy test to find that it is negative. ⁠

“Phew! But where the heck is my period?!”⁠
⁠
Well, here’s the thing. Your period isn’t actually late, but rather your ovulation is delayed 🤯⁠
⁠
Ovulation is the main event of the menstrual cycle where an egg is released from one of the ovaries. If the egg hasn’t been fertilised by sperm during that cycle, then a menstrual period will occur approximately 11-16 days later. ⁠
⁠
But without ovulation we wouldn’t have a true menstrual bleed. There are factors that can delay or prevent ovulation from occurring, such as stress, illness, travel, under-eating, poor nutrition, over-exercising, and poor sleep.⁠
⁠
Your body will ovulate when it feels safe and ready!⁠
⁠
This is where cycle charting and tracking ovulation is so useful. It provides you with the information on where you are each day in your cycle, when you have ovulated, and when to expect your next period. No more guessing or stressing! 💁🏻‍♀️⁠

Your period isn’t just something that happens ev

Your period isn’t just something that happens every month, it can actually tell you so much about your health.

So what is your period telling you?

Your period is late 👉🏻 Late periods (or long cycles) are caused by delayed ovulation. This is because ovulation needs to occur in order for your period to take place 11-16 days later. Stress, poor sleep, undereating, poor nutrition, over-exercising, illness, and travel can all delay or prevent ovulation.

Your period is early 👉🏻 Early periods (or short cycles) can also be due to stress. The early period may not be a true period, but rather a breakthrough bleed from not ovulating that cycle.

Your period is lighter or shorter 👉🏻 Bleeding for less than 2 days and/or is very light in flow can be due to low oestrogen levels or a sign that it wasn’t a true period.

Your period is heavier or longer 👉🏻 Having more blood loss or bleeding for more than 7 days can be a sign of hormone imbalance. Excess oestrogen can cause the uterine lining to thicken more, which would cause more blood loss. Low progesterone or thyroid dysfunction can also be a factor.

Your period is clotty 👉🏻 Passing clots much larger than a 5 cent piece or 1.9cm is a sign of excess oestrogen and is usually accompanied by a heavier blood flow. Clots can also be due to uterine fibroids or polyps, thyroid issues, bleeding disorders, etc.

Your period is painful 👉🏻 Period pain is usually due to inflammation in the body. If pain is chronic and/or severe, it may be a sign of an underlying condition, such as endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Spotting 1-2 days before and after your period is

Spotting 1-2 days before and after your period is typically normal. ⁠
⁠
If your spotting days exceed this, then my friend, something else might be going on.⁠
⁠
If you have spotting for 3 or more days prior to your period starting, this is usually a sign that your progesterone levels are low 📉. ⁠
⁠
Progesterone is the hormone most prominent in the second half of the cycle - the luteal phase - from the day after ovulation to the day before your next period. Progesterone holds the uterine lining in place to help support pregnancy if conception was to have occurred during that cycle.⁠
⁠
If progesterone is low, then it struggles to keep the lining in place, causing multiple days of spotting until your period finally arrives.⁠
⁠
If you experience spotting for 3+ days after your period then this can be a sign of hormone imbalances, position of the uterus, infection, or conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, or hypothyroidism.⁠

Spotting is considered very light vaginal bleeding

Spotting is considered very light vaginal bleeding. ⁠
⁠
You may notice it on toilet paper after wiping yourself or in your underwear. ⁠
⁠
Spotting usually only requires the use of a panty liner if needing or wanting to protect your underwear. There isn't enough blood for a pad or tampon. ⁠
⁠
Spotting blood can be dark red or brown or light brown (old blood) or more of a rich or vibrant red (fresh blood).⁠
⁠
It is common to have spotting for either 1-2 days before or after your period and is typically normal.⁠
⁠
However, there are times in the menstrual cycle (that is outside of your period) where spotting may not be normal or if you have spotting for a number of days at a time.⁠
⁠
Here is a list of the main causes behind your spotting:⁠
🩸 Low progesterone⁠
🩸 Ovulation spotting⁠
🩸 Pregnancy⁠
🩸 Infection (somewhere in the reproductive tract)⁠
🩸 Birth control⁠
🩸 Endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, cysts, or polyps⁠
🩸 Pre- or post-period spotting⁠
⁠
If you are spotting a lot throughout your cycle then it is best to get this checked out with your healthcare provider.⁠
